FERPA Compliance Training

Protecting the Confidentiality of Student Information

If you work for an educational institution, you likely handle or encounter confidential student information on a daily basis. Test scores, transcripts, financial information, reprimands, all of this data is vital to the educational wellbeing of every student and needs to be safeguarded against unauthorized access.

Protecting this information is the goal of FERPA, which stands for the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. Passed in 1974, FERPA protects the confidentiality of student education records in any educational agency or institution (e.g. public or private elementary, secondary, or post-secondary school) that receives federal funding.

FERPA regulations are enforced by the U.S. Department of Education’s Family Policy Compliance Office, which responds to complaints of alleged abuse of student records. If found to be in noncompliance with these rules, an educational intuition receiving federal funds may suffer the following consequences:

  • Loss of federal funding
  • Lawsuits
  • Fine and/or jail time
  • Employee dismissal

MediaPro's FERPA training ensures educational institution employees know the requirements for access and disclosure of confidential student information. FERPA Compliance Training
